NEBULAE ALONG THE MILKY WAY FROM SCUTUM TO SAGITTARIUS

The Milky Way runs brightly from Scutum (to the left of center) to northern Sagittarius (lower right). Four reddish diffuse nebulae, regions of star birth, dot the stream, from center to lower right, Messier 16, Messier 17 (the Omega Nebula), Messier 20 (the Trifid Nebula), and Messier 8 (the Lagoon). The compact open cluster Messier 11 lies in the semi-circle in Scutum to the left of center. The stars of Serpens Cauda line along the top of the picture, while some of Aquila appears to the far right. North is up and to the left.
