SOUTH CENTRAL SCORPIUS

South-central Scorpius features one of the most luminous stars of the Galaxy, Zeta-1 Scorpii, the right hand star of the apparent double toward bottom central. The left hand star, Zeta-2 Scorpii, is much closer and merely lies along the line of sight. Mu Sco, also a line-of-sight double, is the bright pair at the top (Mu-1 to the right, Mu-2 to the left). Immediately above Zeta Scorpii is the compact cluster NGC 6231, and up and to the left of that is the large cluster H12. Eta Sco is at bottom left.
