The colored band may look like a rainbow, but it is not. It is instead a fine example of a circumhorizontal arc that is formed by sunlight refracted through the square ends of flat ice-crystal plates in light clouds. Vividly colored and attached to the lower edge of the rarely-seen 47 degree halo, the circumhorizontal arc is seen only when the Sun is high in the sky.
