Solar Diffraction Corona

Corona

The solar atmospheric "corona" is produced by diffraction in ice crystals or water droplets in overlying clouds. (It is not the "corona" seen during a total eclipse.) The colors are reversed from those of the 22 degree halo or sundogs, with blue inside and red outside. (Do not try to see this phenomenon, as the Sun is too bright; view it around the Moon instead.)
