The Setting Sun
The setting Sun's oval shape is caused by refraction in the Earth's
atmosphere. The lower limb shines hits the air at a steeper angle
and is therefore refracted upward more than the upper limb. The air
near the horizon is also thicker than that at the Sun's upper limb.
As a result, the lower edge of the Sun is absorbed more, and appears
darker and redder.
