CLASSICAL STAR ATLASES

BAYER'S PERSEUS

Perseus, the great Hero, recuer of Andromeda, from Bayer's Uranometria of 1603. Mirfak, the Alpha star, is just up from center, while Algol (Beta Persei) marks the Medusa's head. The Milky Way runs down and to the left. The dark band at the bottom is the upper part of the 14-degree-wide band that centers on the Zodiac in which the planets are found. Auriga, with Capella, is down and to the left. The bright star to the right labelled "a" is Almach, Gamma Andromedae. The "stars" in the hilt of the sword labelled "h" and "Chi" together are the Double Cluster. Compare with Bode's representation.
