The Sun rises through the mists over the Illinois prairie. Passage of sunlight through the air absorbs sunlight, and selectively removes violet and blue solar radiation. The thickness of the Earth's atmosphere increases quickly downward, and thus the lower part of the solar disk is fainter and redder than the upper part.
