Aquila is best marked by bright (first magnitude) Altair and its two flanking stars, which together give the sense of the flying Eagle. Altair lies at the southern apex of the Summer Triangle. The newly discovered nova, near Delta Aquilae, is midway between Delta and Mu in brightness.
