20 February, 1998. The great gamma ray burst mystery is nearing a resolution. Astronomers have finally found optical counterparts to the bursts and have associated them with distant galaxies. It now seems likely that gamma ray bursts may involve the mergers of neutron stars that orbit each other in binary systems, the collisions producing the most energetic outpourings of radiation known in the Universe.
