02 February, 1998. Long-period, Mira, variables are proving much more complex than anyone dreamed. Now being resolved by interferometry and even directly with the Hubble Space Telescope, Mira variables are not even spherical, but display irregular blobby shapes. No one knows why or how their shapes influence the mass loss that eventually creates planetary nebulae.
